Shaw Local Radio is seeking a hands-on, solutions-oriented Radio Broadcast Engineer to support and maintain our growing group of radio stations across Northern Illinois. This position is ideal for an experienced broadcast engineer who enjoys a variety of technical challenges, from RF systems and studio operations to IT networking and transmitter maintenance.

Our radio properties include music, sports, and community-focused stations serving local audiences throughout Northern Illinois.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and troubleshoot FM, AM, HD Radio, and translator facilities
  • Monitor and maintain transmitter sites, STL systems, and RF equipment
  • Support studio equipment including consoles, automation systems, audio processors, codecs, and satellite receivers
  • Manage broadcast IP networks, firewalls, switches, and wireless systems
  • Perform preventative maintenance and emergency repairs
  • Coordinate with tower crews, vendors, and regulatory agencies as needed
  • Ensure FCC compliance and maintain required technical records
  • Assist with facility upgrades, equipment installations, and technical projects
  • Provide after-hours technical support on a rotating basis

Qualifications

  • Experience in broadcast engineering, telecommunications, IT networking, or a related technical field
  • Working knowledge of radio transmission systems and studio operations preferred
  • Familiarity with IP networking, routing, switching, VPNs, and remote access technologies.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair electronic equipment
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel between station locations
  • Ability to occasionally lift equipment and work at transmitter facilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior radio or television broadcast engineering experience
  • Knowledge of Wheatstone, WideOrbit, Marketron, ENCO, Burk, Nautel, GatesAir, or similar systems
  • SBE certification
  • FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL)
  • Experience with HD Radio and audio-over-IP systems

Salary Range: $60,000 – $85,000
